From the President's Desk: July 2017

Hard to believe that we are halfway through 2017!

I hope you have taken some time this season to relax with your family and friends, enjoy the sunshine, have a burger, and soak up these warm summer evenings in Texas.

This time of the year especially, I enjoy reflecting on the pride I feel for our nation, state, and local communities. Whether it’s the local celebrations of national pride or fireworks from the 4th of July or the fact that July is the usual time for the Central Texas advocacy trip to D.C., this is one of my favorite months.

This is also the month where we kick off our big out-of-market missions for the year. First, we’ll fly through those spacious skies next week to lead a delegation from our region to Chicago, where we have meetings set up with site selection consultants and corporate decision makers. In August, we’ll go over the amber waves of grain to Southern California and later this fall we head over Pike’s Peak towards Seattle.

Economic development is a relationship-based industry. Investing in these trips for in-person meetings is a key part of our marketing efforts. In fact, studies show that face-to-face meetings are the most effective way to market to site selectors. These trips allow us to bring our story to potential new employers and give us an opportunity to learn more about a company’s plan for growth (hopefully here in our region)!

I’m also looking forward to going north in September to be a speaker at the International Economic Development Council’s (IEDC) Annual Conference in Toronto. I’ve been asked to talk about the role of regionalism in economic development and how working together with partners is the future for economic development and foreign direct investment. Collaboration – Not Competition!

We also have so much going on in the day to day of the region. First, thank you to Texas Representative John Cyrier for providing GSMP Investors with a legislative update at our last Quarterly Investor Meeting! I had the pleasure of speaking to The San Marcos Lion’s Club last week and am excited for the organization’s future! We have been able to be a part of several great ribbon-cutting celebrations from some of our generous partners and investors. There has also been a lot of media around our momentum here in the region, including the Mashable story you’ll read about in this newsletter.

It is my pleasure to serve you here at the Greater San Marcos Partnership. Please let us know how we can help you!

Stay cool!
