In late 2009, the Greater San Marcos Partnership worked with Market Street
Services, as part of the comprehensive Economic Development Strategy, to
identify the most promising target clusters for the Greater San Marcos
Partnership to pursue.
Based on our physical assets, such as location
along the I-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio; the nearby I-10; Texas
State University and other institutes of higher education and training: the San
Marcos Municipal Airport and nearby Austin-Bergstrom and San Antonio
International Airports; and our unique and appealing lifestyle opportunities;
as well as our community and business assets, we have identified five key core
industries: Health Care, Materials Science and Advanced Manufacturing; Supply
Chain Management; Corporate and Professional Operations; and Green Industries.
Entrepreneurism is another strong industry
throughout Greater San Marcos, as evidenced by the Texas State University Science, Technology, and Research
(STAR) Incubator – a $6 million dollar project that will create 20,000 square
feet of lab space for start up companies to develop technology and use
university resources to help bring ideas to market.
Facilities will include clean rooms; wet labs;
instrumentation labs; and office space for research and development in
alternative energy, biotechnology, green technology, nanotechnology, and new
materials.
