San Marcos, Texas: Big-City Living, Small-Town Atmosphere

The San Marcos River, famous as a recreation and relaxation site, unites people from all walks of life as it winds through the region. The central Texas sun and temperate climate allows residents to enjoy tubing, kayaking, snorkeling or simply soaking up the sun on the banks of the river from March through September of every year. Parkland surrounds much of the river, as San Marcos boasts the largest per capita parkland in the region. Spring Lake, famous for its ecological and historical significance, is the source of life for the river as well as several types of endangered species.

The Aquarena Center, managed by Texas State University- San Marcos and the River Systems Institute, surrounds Spring Lake and offers a sense of history to the community also notable in the town’s four historic districts. Those looking for the local social scene can check out the Downtown Historic District, which offers a variety of restaurants, bars, cafes and shopping opportunities. Shoppers can also indulge in the Tanger Outlet Center and Premium Outlets conveniently located off of Interstate 35.

The San Marcos region provides educational opportunities from elementary school to doctoral degrees.  Texas State University boasts NCAA Division I athletic teams, providing the community with local sporting events as well. The university also provides a variety of fine arts showcases which, combined with community concerts and cultural events, allow residents to enjoy a vast array of entertainment.
